You are a small business. You sell products or services that I'm interested in and I'm ready to become your best customer! And then I notice a few things and look for someone else in your field. Even if you have customer service down to a science, there are things that make me walk away.
1. Do not load your feed with political or religious posts. It's okay to have an opinion, and even to share it occasionally in a respectful manner, but remember you are talking to your customers and many of them may not share your views.
2. Do not badmouth a customer. Ever. Seriously, other customers are reading this and wondering what you are saying about them. Is it worth a two sentence rant to lose even a small percentage of your business?
3. Do not complain or whine or gripe about your lack of sales. When I see that, I just assume that everyone else knows something I don't and join them in steering clear of you. While we're on the subject, don't post sob stories about why I have to buy something from you because you need the money so badly. We all need money to get by in this world. If your kid needs braces and you whine about how much you need to sell because of that, you may just remind me that my kid needs braces too, so I should save my money.
4. Do not write a blog post about how to sell the stuff you don't like, at your top price, to a group of people that you consider less important than your real clients. You think I'm joking? I've seen this! Some of us treat every single customer with the same respect and work hard to give them our top products. Customers do know the difference.
5. Do not make me try to decipher what you are saying. DO use proper English, and check your spelling and grammar. Also, I don't want to see how many swear words you know, or how many creative ways you can use them. If you can't shout it in a room full of grandmas, don't say it online.
Your name is inextricably connected to your business, so even if you post these things on your personal pages your customers know, and despite what you may think, they probably care. Stay positive and respectful, it makes the difference between success and failure.

Motivation Monday - Custom Orders
Oh, so it's not Monday? It is still early in the week though right? I hope so, because I still have a LOT to do this week!
I didn't have much time during the past week to play with the cupcake patterns I posted last Monday because virtually everything I made was a custom order. Did I tell you I love custom orders! They often inspire and push me to try things I may not have otherwise considered. Please don't hesitate to let me know if there is something special I can make for you!

Here are a few from the last few days, and I have several more on the board for this week.
I think a little Bachman Turner Overdrive is in order for this week's motivation!
Have a great week and stay motivated!

What's Up Wednesday
Another regular feature on my blog? YES! What's up Wednesday is where you will find upcoming events, news, and interesting tidbits.
So what's up this Wednesday? I'm attempting to make a major overhaul in the way I manage my time. Until last week I managed my time by making a daily to-do list. Totally sounds like a great idea. It's not. My list included everything, everyday, and I do mean EVERYTHING!
Here's a sample:
Make beads,
clean and photograph yesterday's beads,
deliver beads to Sun Dog,
list on Etsy,
Flikr update,
blog,
fan page update,
tweet,
post office and/or bank,
make jewelry
(plus housework, dinner, laundry, grocery shopping, dishes, etc., etc., etc.)
See what I mean? Basically, I always felt like I was behind, then overwhelmed, and then in need of a nap. Not to mention the guilt over whatever didn't get done.
So my new program is to make a list of everything that needs to get done in a week and assign tasks to specific days. Many of these things could be done once a week. I don't have to clean and photograph beads everyday; if I do it once a week I only drag out all the supplies for those jobs once (saves time and since it's not on the list every day I don't feel like it's overwhelming me).
Many of you are probably thinking "well, duh!". But believe me, it's huge for me to tell myself it's ok to put something on the list for Tuesday, and then only worry about that thing on Tuesday.
This is my first week, so I'm still tweaking my schedule - but I see this working really well for me. The goal is to eventually get everything done, AND be less stressed, and (slightly) less neurotic ~ Wish me Luck!

Long Distance Running
No, I'm not running a marathon (no suprise to those of you who know me!), but it certainly feels like it these days. Right now I'm running my life, my home and my business long distance while I help my Grandfather with harvest. I'm scattered all over "Hell's half acre" (as Grandpa puts it) and it's a bit of a challenge. Hubby and the kids are at home ~ thank goodness for text messaging and facebook! And I must say, Dusty makes a much better housewife than I do!
But the business stuff all has to travel back and forth between here and home when we're not picking. Unfortunately, that sometimes means that no matter where I am, something I need is in another location.
This is the temporary torch set up at my in-law's house:
I have an 8X10 studio at home that is absolutely packed ~ so when my husband saw this he said "really, is that all you need?" Um, no. I need all that stuff, this is just the very bare essentials.
And my temporary jewelry, Etsy, mailing station at my friend's house:
But it's totally worth it when I get to spend all day outside; fresh air, the sun on my face, and haning out with my Grandpa! This amazing man has so much knowledge to share and so many interesting stories to tell. I learn something new every time he talks to me. It is an incredible experience to go to work every day with a man who truly loves what he does and I continue to learn so much from his passion for life.
I wouldn't miss this opportunity for anything!
Here's my Farmville post from last year, and every word of it holds true.
http://vedasbeads.blogspot.com/2010/10/life-lessons-from-farmville.html
Plus ~ I get to play fun games like "Can you spot the fruit in this tree?" Hint: It's a pear.
And just look at the view from my "office"!
So, while my life may be crazy, busy, scattered ~ I wouldn't have it any other way!
Today's experiences are tomorrow's memories, and I treasure every one.

What Doesn't Work
Sometimes answering the question "what doesn't work" is as important as learning what does work. Partly because answering this question means you are trying new things, experimenting with new ideas, and probably well on your way to some fantastic new art work!
As a continuation of my collaboration post: Dusty thought I could do something with the fork and spoon ends that were left over from making the bracelets. So I decided to add glass to the ends and see if I could make fancy hors d'Ĺ“uvre forks.
It didn't work....
They would have been a little short, but I attempted it anyway as a "would it work" test.
This fork was stainless steel, which is what my mandrels are made of, and I know from experience I can permently stick beads to my mandrels if the bead release breaks. However, in this case the glass shattered on the interior (why it didn't fall off yet I don't know).
Will I try this again? Maybe. Perhaps there is some other way to do it that would have better results.
Will I try other things? You Betcha! I already have 2 more new ideas that will either be abject failures or totally cool successes. Either way ~ another valuable lesson learned at the torch.

Show Booth
Whether you are taking your wares to sell at a one day street fair or a week long art festival, the question you always ask yourself is "what will I need while I'm there?". I've seen this question come up over and over online, so I thought I would share my list.
First things first ~ I start making my list 3-5 days before the event. And yes, I do make a new list every time because I can never seem to find the old one. Assuming you're more organized than I am, you will only need to do this step once. :)
This is my list, in no particular order:
Tent
Tent Stakes
Weight for Each Tent Leg - in case you are on concrete or not allowed to drive stakes
~ This could be 5 gallon jugs of water, concrete cylinders, sand bags or anything heavy you can transport
Tables
Chairs
~ These first few may seem obvious, but I've learned the hard way - Everything goes on the list!
Table cloths
Table skirts and clips
Any Required License or Proof of Insurance
Display items - for me this includes a driftwood tree, bowls, boxes, shadow boxes, busts, etc.
Signs - I have 2 that hang on the booth and a stand up one on the table
Camera - You will want pictures, some shows actually require them before they accept you.
Extra batteries/memory card for cameraClamps - I use these to hold down my table cloths if it's windy
Change
Cash Box
Business Cards
Basic Tool Kit - I don't know how many times I've found a need for a hammer or a screwdriver
Candy and Dish - you will be surprised how many people stop and look just so they can have a candy!
Duct Tape - Every time I have set up a booth I've found a use for it
Pens
Receipt Book
Square (or whatever method you use for accepting credit cards)
Price Tags - they invariably fall off of something
Sharpie
Scotch TapeString - Believe me, you'll find a use for it
Card Stock - You always think of one more sign you wish you had made
Baling Wire - I've hung signs and displays with it as well as attached weight to my tent legs
Sunscreen
Cooler
Water
Jewelry Tools and a cloth measuring tape - for resizing or an on the spot special order
Lint Roller - for the table cloths as well as your own clothes
Kleenex
Hand Sanitizer
Note Pad - for email sign-ups or just notes to yourself about what you forgot
Scissors - for removing tags
Mirror - for customers to see how that great piece will look on them
Wagon - really helpful if you can bring one, you never know how far from your booth you will have to park
Packaging - bags or boxes to send your customers' treasures home with them
And of course ~
Beads and Jewelry!Leave the list where you can see it for a few days as you will invariably think of things to add.
2 days before your event - start staging. Gather everything on your list in one place because even with the list you are likely to forget something if it's not all together.
The day before the event - load the vehicle. Pack all the items from your list and then take a walk around your house and/or studio to see if anything else comes to mind.
Event Day - Set up your booth. Pat yourself on the back for remembering everything (see, you did need that duct tape!)
Take pictures of your booth - even if you don't need them to get in to the next event, you will want to know what worked and what didn't for next time.
Here's a picture of the booth I did last weekend. I now know to put the tent SIDES on my list, and the extra memory card was also added to the list because of this booth!
Hey ~ it just occurred to me: I now have a permanent copy of my list!

Shout Out!
My life in beads has been enriched and encouraged beyond measure by the people who support me! I think it's time to let them know and to introduce them to you...
My incredible husband Dusty! This man will listen to me talk about beads for hours without even getting a glassy (haha) look in his eyes! He jokes about hawking beads like a carnie - but he's there at every festival setting up, selling beads and tearing down. He's my biggest fan and my most trusted advice giver.
My goofy friend Kristin ~ owner of The Sun Dog Bead Co. the best bead store in town! She's always coming up with new ideas for me to try and is my biggest inspiration. This woman sells more of my beads than I do!
My beautiful girls! Design ideas, tech support, promoters and the people who love even the beads I just want to throw away!
My BFF Melody! Nothing feeds my creativity like the two of us dumping every bead we own in the middle of one of our kitchen tables and bouncing ideas off each other while we make jewelry.
My Dad! He's always so positive about my work and full of new ideas for me. I know he's supposed to like the stuff I make because he's my Dad, but he always makes me feel like he likes it for real!
My Sister! (Apparently I don't have a photo) But she's a great promoter and the woman who first introduced me to this addiction!
And I could go on and on.... In-laws, friends, extended family, facebook friends.... all the people who encourage, inspire, critique, and support me ~

New Line of Beads!
So what do you do when you're super excited about a new line of beads! It's so hard to decide - do you roll out the whole line (i.e. several at once) with hoopla and fanfare? Or do you introduce them one at a time? One at a time will get more views in your Etsy shop - and we all know views equal sales. But all at once makes a more dramatic entrance! I voted for all at once for this line, I'm just too excited about it to only do one at a time! So what am I talking about?
Color and motion drawing attention to your hair! The charm lets me add elements that I would ordinarily not be able to create on a bead - like dragonflies for instance, I can never get those right! I hope you enjoy these as much as I enjoy making them! I'm headed to the torch to see what else I can do with these - I think today I'll make one with a lizzard, but who knows? The possiblities are endless!

Random Thoughts
I have been on a roll lately! In the last two days I delivered over 140 beads to my local bead store The Sun Dog Bead Co. Two torching sessions per day have really boosted my production, and the cooler weather has helped a little. I'm still working my way through a huge pile of beads that aren't currently listed anywhere for some reason or other. I must often put them in the boxes that correspond with where they are listed before they actually make it on the site! Some of that pile will be made into jewelry for my 1000 Markets shop, but most will be listed on Etsy and ArtFire. There is only a week and a half before school starts so we're headed out of town for a few days, but come September - Look Out! I'll actually be able to torch full time without any interuptions! I'm planning to update my blog once a week starting now (wait, now - no, now) :) and I'm also working on a tutorial! More on that soon. There is so much to do when you're a one man show!! Have a fabulous weekend and I'll see you next week :)
